Bridgeport Bridge (US 40) [Abandoned]
The former Bridgeport Bridge carried U.S. Route 40 over a back channel of the Ohio River between Wheeling Island, West Virginia and Bridgeport, Ohio.Constructed in 1893, the multi-truss span underwent renovations in 1950, when the wooden bridge deck was replaced with steel grating. By 1987, however, the floor beams had become structurally unsound for automobile traffic, and a self-supporting, load-bearing deck structure was installed inside the trusses of the bridge. This was a temporary measure, as the bridge was effectively replaced with an adjacent steel-girder bridge in 1997.(1)
